I know, this officially qualifies me as a pansy since we live in one of the warmest places in the U.S., but when it's nippy outside, P.E. sound like torture to me. Sometimes the weather is certifiably awful, and sometimes I feel like the effort to get the kids properly clothed and shod to go outside just isn't worth it.
Sometimes we'll save P.E. for the end of the school day, when it's a touch warmer. But often by the end of day I've lost all motivation and we end up skipping it. Sometimes we do yoga here in the house, and the lovers and haters divide pretty much along gender lines. So to be honest, a lot of times P.E. ends up just being free time.
Today I had a breakthrough: inside games! I know, it's revolutionary--pretty much the best way to get a whole bunch of kids moving without making them whine. I came up with a new game called "Walls," which just happens to be a great form of interval training. The object of the game is to touch as many walls in the house as we can in less than two minutes. Since we have a big house and since each of the stairs counts as a wall, this game gets us speeding around the house, bumping into each other and the furniture, giggling, counting to 60 or 70, and collapsing in a heap at the end of two minutes. We did several variations, like touching light switches or sitting on each piece of furniture, and the person with the highest number gets to run the stopwatch for the following round. We sit and breathe hard for a sec, and then we're off to the races again. I'm pretty darn pleased with this idea.
I'm thinking tag is another obvious solution for this problem, but I might have to get on Pinterest after we do that if my creativity fails me. It'll be worth it if I can stay toasty and warm this term.
